Wedding Toasts - The 10 Commandments Of Toasting
Saturday, June 19, 2010
| 12:04 PM | Posted by Something Plush | Comments: (0)The 10 Commandments Of Toasting
1. Plan to speak from 1 to 4 minutes. No one wants to be bored with an extraordinarily long toast covering the entirety of your friendship. With wedding toasts, even a short toast will do if delivered with feeling and sincerity.
2. Make sure all other glasses are full before beginning. You may want to announce to the guests, or have the MC announce to the guests, to fill their glasses because toasting will commence shortly. Then give guests 3 - 5 minutes to fill their glasses.
3. Stand to give a toast (sit to receive one) and hold your glass with your right hand as you toast. After the toast, it is tradition to then clink the glasses together before sipping.
4. Start with something personal. How the bride and groom met is always a favorite. You can also use humor or quotes to get started.
5. Always use humor in good taste. While poking fun at the bride and groom can add the touch of humor you're looking for, poking too much fun will only gain you a disapproving audience.
6. Speak in your normal voice, and avoid unnatural hand gestures or fake accents. Wedding audiences want to hear what you have to say, not watch a drama unfold. Just remember you were chosen to be you, not someone else.
7. Practice your toast. Unless you are an accomplished public speaker, just 'winging it' for the wedding toast is always a bad idea.
8. Look around the room at the audience and to the bride and groom as you toast. Eye contact is an important characteristic of a good speaker.
9. Speak clearly and don't rush. Take your time and take a deep breath, because if you speak too fast, no one is going to understand you.
10. And finally, finish your toast with a wish, blessing, congratulations, or cheers.
The 5 Biggest Mistakes To Avoid
1. Having more than one drink to calm nerves beforehand. It may seem like a good idea, but besides calming your nerves, too much alcohol will also keep you from speaking clearly and hinder your good judgment of appropriate speech material.
2. Swearing and/or lying.
3. Apologizing for being a bad speaker - Never apologize for being a bad speaker, and don't say you really didn't want to speak. It's a rule for all speeches and all occasions, not just weddings.
4. Mentioning previous girlfriends, past marriages, or past relationships. Not only could it be potentially embarrassing, but it's inappropriate at a wedding. Leave this for the stag party.
5. Stories about the Bride and Groom that aren't rated PG. Remember, Grandma, Grandpa and possibly even children will be present at the wedding. Make sure your stories are appropriate for the audience.
So here's to your next toast, my friend, may it be a sweet success!

Budget Wedding Planning - 5 Tips to Deal With Pushy Friends and Family
Monday, June 14, 2010
| 6:21 AM | Posted by Something Plush | Comments: (0)One of the most frustrating things when planning a wedding can be friends and family that chime in with things that you absolutely "have to have" at your wedding. While most friends and family are very well meaning, that doesn't mean that they don't ramp up your stress significantly.
Anytime you hear a sentence begin with "Are you going to...." or "You should have...." picture a giant red flag waving in front of your face. Suggestions that start like this are sure to be budget busters.
Sure, when these comments or suggestions come from people outside of your inner circle, it's not hard to discount them. Just say thank you and "that's an idea I'll think about" and do what it is that you had planned on. But, dealing with suggestions of close friends or family members can be a bit more tricky. You may not know the best way to gently tell them that their suggestion doesn't fit into your budget. Be really careful here - this outside pressure can and is generally responsible for couples going over their budget. You've got to find a way to let these people down gently and not fall prey to the pressure their suggestions often put on you. Sure, it may easier to give in, but just think about the extra bills you'll have on your hands after you are married.
5 Tips To Deal With Pushy Friends And Family
1. Gee, that's a great suggestion, but our budget is really tight
This type of response will eliminate thoughts the person making the suggesting may have that you are singling out their suggestion as not being worthy. Some people will challenge you that their suggestion won't cost all that much. If you've done your homework, you'll likely know what their suggestion will cost and can let them know the actual cost. Show them your budget if you think that will help.
2. Let people know in advance that you won't be inviting people that you don't know very well
This will eliminate or at least help cushion the blow when various family members want long lost relatives invited. If you've not seen someone for 10 years, does it make sense to spend money to include them in your wedding? In many cases, a simple announcement will suffice. This will also let the long lost relative know that you are not ignoring them.
3. Let people know that you've already made many tough decisions on the guest list and that you really can't squeeze anymore in.
This approach is best used when someone you invited asks if it would be OK for them to bring an additional guest. This approach will also show that you've put a lot of thought into your guest list. Perhaps you can offer to go out to dinner with those that you simply aren't able to add to the guest list. Sure, it's not the wedding, but it'll show that you care about these people.
4. We've decided that we will only be inviting family and close friends
This approach works well when a family member or friend wants to have clients or other business associates attend the wedding. If you allow these extraneous guests to attend, you're sure to blow your budget. This approach also lets people know that this is your wedding and that you have the final say.
5. Say "that's a nice idea, but I simply don't have the time or money for it"
This works well if your mother in law or close friend wants you to make favors or centerpieces or some such thing. Letting them know you don't have the time is a great way to deflect this type of suggestion. As an added benefit, people with these type of suggestions may offer to do it themselves - saving you money in this area of the budget. Assuming they are planning on paying for all the materials, that is.
Remember, this is your celebration and your money. It's always nice to say yes when you can, but by all means, don't bow to the pressure others put on you just to keep them happy because it'll be coming out of your pocket!
Of course, one of the best ways to shortstop pushy friends and family members is to communicate with them before they can make budget busting suggestions.
I've found that one of the best ways to jump on top of this before it becomes an issue is to share your budget with your friends and family as soon as you put it together. Definitely share it with those who are may be helping you pay for the wedding. Doing so will show these folks that you are on top of things and will have a very clear understanding of the limits you've set. Most clear thinking people will not saddle you with suggestions that are out of your budget when they know what your budget is.

Planning a Baby Shower - Useful Tips
Saturday, June 12, 2010
| 12:01 PM | Posted by Something Plush | Comments: (0)Anyone except the expectant couple can throw baby showers. A relative, close friend or co-worker can plan a shower. Baby showers are usually held during the seventh or eighth month of pregnancy. It's also all right to schedule a shower for after the baby's birth. That way, guests know the baby's gender and can bring gender-specific gifts.
When you're planning a baby shower, be sure to consult with the parents-to-be before setting a date for the party to avoid scheduling conflicts. Consult the other guests to make sure most of them are available. You can hold the party at your house, backyard, or any convenient party place that can accommodate all your guests. Send out the invitations at least three weeks before the scheduled event.
Baby showers do not need a theme, but having one will help in the planning and preparation process. A theme can help you decide on the party decor, activities, games and prizes. You can have a rubber ducky theme, a Hollywood baby shower theme, diaper party, layette party, etc. A theme provides focus for your planning.
Activities for the baby shower will depend on the guests' personalities and inclinations. You can play silly games or do more serious activities such as filling a blank book with parenting tips and advice. Guests actually look forward to these games. One decorating idea that is actually a game is to hang clotheslines across the room and use clothespins to attach baby items such as diaper, baby socks, baby blanket, pacifier, small toys, baby hat, etc. In another room, hand out blank sheets of paper and ask each guest to list the items hanging on the clotheslines. Whoever remembers the most number of items wins a prize, and mom gets to keep the items.
During the party, offer your guests plenty of refreshments. You can prepare a buffet of finger foods such as tea sandwiches, chips and dips, cookies, chocolates, and trays of fresh fruits and vegetables. You may also host a more formal luncheon or dinner. Serve non-alcoholic punches, lemonade or iced tea.
A convenient and economical way to hold a shower is for the hostess to put together a small committee of close friends and family members who can each bring a dish to the shower.
Planning a baby shower that is loads of fun can be easy if you follow the tips given above. Remember to take lots of pictures during the party, ask for email addresses and upload the pictures so everyone can relive the memories after the event.
Moms-to-be will always appreciate any heartfelt gifts that you give them & one baby gift item that will always be appreciated is a stylish baby changing bag.
